Friday night lights. A dream for many. A dream taken from Michelangelo Ramirez. During the last game of the 2020 season, Ramirez was hit with a late blow to the knee that would take him out of the game for the next two years. Michaelangelo explains his initial reaction to the injury: “I don’t know, I mean it was [all] so quickly.” His initial reaction to the injury was denial—denial of the pain and of ever playing again.
“Time moved slow, super slow.” Michelangelo wanted to be there for his team physically, not just mentally. He was sad that he would not be there to help and participate. He dedicated himself to his physical therapy in order to not only keep himself busy but also make a swift recovery in order to get back “better and stronger.”
When he could not do his part as quarterback physically, he made sure to still be active mentally with the team in order to stay caught up with everything that was going on. “I would do my part and review the film Coach posted.”
Confidence is key to participation in a sport. Not a shadow of doubt crosses his mind in his return to football. He expressed his joy as being “happy to be back with his brothers.” Not even the thought of reinjuring his knee worries him. His parents have expressed concern over his well being but overall, Michelangelo is calm and confident. The team has had a disappointing win to loss ratio, but the team is there. He says that the team is “[An] overall good team with some flaws.” Michelangelo wished he could have made it back in time for his final season, but unfortunately he did not. “[I] dream to play under the lights.” As a senior, it is the last year for many to play, and Michelangelo, who was ecstatic and eager for his moment under the lights, had that stripped away from him.
